CELSS - Closed Ecological Life Support Systems
Long-duration manned space missions, such as bases on the Moon, and expeditions to Mars, will virtually require closed ecosystems, so that astronauts can grow food, and recycle human waste and their own exhaled CO2. This requirement has spurred decades of research into closed ecosystems for human life support. Much of this research should apply to Project Persephone's agenda as well, although the Project is better described as Closed Ecological Maintenance of Near-Earth Unmanned Spacecraft (CENEMUS).
Project Persephone aims to launch exovivaria - orbital habitats for plants and animals. If successful, and if a space hotel industry emerges, exovivaria might import waste from those hotels (sewage, meal scraps), and export food and other ecosystem products to them.
